Reconnecting the Missing Generation: A Framework for Young Adult Ministry

Logo Tufeao

In 2019, my wife and I felt led to start a young adults group TWAY - to address the growing absence of the 20-35 age group in churches. Originally formed as a home group for friends who had drifted away from traditional church settings, this ministry flourished by being intentionally inclusive and focused on the unique needs of this demographic. Join us to discover the key strategies behind its success and gain valuable insights and practical tips for creating an impactful young adults ministry. Whether you're looking to start a new group or strengthen an existing one, this workshop will provide you with a framework to engage and inspire the missing generation in your community.

Logo Tufeao, a current ministry PCANZ ordinand, elder, and Sunday school teacher from Newton PIPC, who will share his experiences in young adults ministry.

A Snapshot of the Story of the Bible - Terry Pouono

This presentation offers an interactive and engaging approach to understanding the broad shape of the biblical story. We will journey through six acts, from the Creation story to the final act of New Beginnings as depicted in the Book of Revelation. Along the way, we'll delve into critical turning points and themes, making it a valuable resource for Sunday School teachers, youth leaders, and anyone seeking a more accessible understanding of the Bible's narrative.

Terry is a lecturer in Theology at Laidlaw College. Terry loves teaching theology and having ‘talanoa’ (conversations) with his students. This dialogical approach to learning enriches the theological learning with an integration of theory and practice. Terry has taught various courses at level five such as Biblical Theology, Beginning Theology and Church History. He has a special interest in intercultural studies, lecturing in Gospel and culture and Majority world theology. Terry is currently preparing two Pacific courses for teaching in 2023 called ‘A History of Pacific Christianity and Pasifika Theology.’

Terry was raised in the Congregational Christian Church Samoa, but in recent years his family have been attending the Presbyterian Church. He has preached at churches across Auckland. Outside of the Laidlaw, Terry likes to get involved in community projects. He is a Board of Trustees member at Roscommon School, and he is the local area co-ordinator for the Cancer Society.

How can we apply these teachings to our contemporary world? This presentation equips you with essential skills for interpreting the Bible, focusing on key terms such as exegesis, eisegesis, and hermeneutics. We will put these skills into practice by examining some biblical texts, empowering you to engage with the Word of God more effectively.

Transforming unjust structures: exploring the justice of Jesus through advocacy and campaigns: Alex Johnston

As Christians in this land, how do we confront the big issues of our time like climate change, inequality and the legacy of colonisation? This will be an introductory workshop on the 'what' and 'how' of following the justice of Jesus, and an overview of the work of Common Grace Aotearoa to organise Christians to  transform unjust structures for God's creation, for our economy and to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Alex (Pākehā, Scottish/Irish whakapapa) is the Co-Director and co-founder of Common Grace Aotearoa, a growing movement of Christians being equipped and organised to transform unjust structures for the common good.  He's passionate about seeing the church step into its calling to be a gracious and prophetic changemaker in the public sphere, and is animated by a wholehearted spirituality that partners with God to break physical as well as spiritual chains holding people back from flourishing. He currently lives at Ngatiawa River Monastery, a contemporary Anglican monastery on the Kāpiti Coast, on the whenua of Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai with his wife Genevieve, and their 2 year old daughter, and is part of the Anglican missional order of Urban Vision (though has deep Presbyterian roots!)

Self - Care as Self -Tending Kyle Hastelow

Looking after yourself in today’s world can be challenging. We can find ourselves exhausted and maxed out. People in ministry can especially be pulled in many different directions, trying to meet many needs. We can get into unhealthy and unsustainable patterns of living and working, where our own needs are set aside. But God cares about us, as well as those we minister to; about our wellbeing, and our flourishing. That is what this workshop is about.

Kyle Hastelow is the Associate Youth Enabler for Presbytery Central he has been working with youth in various different roles for over two decades. He is passionate about supporting people in ministry towards more holistic and sustainable practices.

Shaping the Future Church
Ryhan Prasad

In this practical workshop we will explore how younger voices can be heard and acted on in our church. We’ll look at smart ways for these younger voices to shape the local, regional and national structures of our church and how to overcome some of the obstacles along the way.

Kia ora!   I’m Rev. Ryhan Prasad (Raz) and I have a strong interest in reaching out to people with the good news of the Gospel and seeing that form and reform the Presbyterian Church in our time.  My wife Ani and I have two son’s Eli and Theo and currently minister at Khandallah Presbyterian Church in Wellington.

Our ministry continues to be impacted strongly by our bi-cultural journey and the children and young people we encounter everyday.  I’ve been involved with the Presy Youth Scene from Sunday school Leader, small group leader, Easter Camp, Regional Committees, Young Adults Services, A Parish Minister all the way to now serving on the Council Assembly.  CONNECT has been a key touchstone throughout all that and so its awesome to be invited to come share with you all a bit about my Journey.  Peace.
